EVEN BETTER BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

WE HAVE HOUSING! This morning I got wonderful news from one of the program managers, Zhandra, about our housing! We will be staying at Calvary Baptist Church in the city! We are very close to Union Station which makes it even easier get to our site right off the Red Line! Even better, this is one of the few churches that has shower facilities as well, so we won’t have to go from church to gym every day!! THIS TRIP JUST GOT SO MUCH BETTER!!!

Reminder that registration is THIS Sunday @ 8 a.m! Be on your computer ready to click on your trip of choice (which is obviously Washington D.C)! Any questions? Email us at asb.dc2010@gmail.com! Less than 48 hours away!!!

BREAKING NEWS (like seriously)

So we found out tonight that due to budget issues, our trip will no longer be using the train as transportation; however, we are still taking a bus instead of resorting to a van so it should still be BOMB!

Thanks for everyone who showed up to this week’s information session! We know how excited you are for the trip and we are in the process of working out an itinerary for where we want to go see after working at Food and Friends because there is SOOO much to do!

Remember that online registration is THIS Sunday (the 31st) at 8am!

A Break from Homework

Hey guys, it’s Eddie, taking a break from my work to give you an update on the going ons. As you guys narrow down your decisions for ASB, keep in mind that our trip is going to the DC area which means we will be having lots to do during our down time. We only work 9-2 each day so we will have plenty of time to look around. Even for those of us who have been DC plenty of times will have plenty to do. So far we have at least three dinners being provided for us from BU alum and friends, which is totally awesome! For lunch, we will make sandwiches to bring on site with us and we will have a quick bite to eat for breakfast before we leave to go on site. As of right now, we are still taking the train down so we will be using public transportation to get around. We are still trying to hear back from churches and hostels for places to stay so keep in touch. Don’t worry though, I will swear my life that we will have a place to sleep on our trip. Many places have already been booked or do not accommodate volunteers, but no worries! We will have a roof over our heads that week. Reminder that Zach and I will be at our LAST info fair tomorrow at 7 on the 2nd floor in the GSU, next to the Terrace Lounge.

We both hope that you are excited for ASB and encourage you to look through all the trips (but ours is the best, of course).

Oh the weather outside is….

Frightful? Seriously what was that wintry mix we had yesterday? Gross.

Anyways, for those of you who made it out to yesterday’s information session in Metcalf, thanks so much! We want to remind you there’s another information session this coming Tuesday (the 26th) in the Ziskind Lounge. Maybe we will have more snacks for you? Curious to find out what food we’ll have for you at the info session? Then come.

Updates: housing is still getting worked on. We are in contact with a hostel and trying to bargain with them and bring down the prices. There is also a potential church we are staying at, so cross your fingers! If you have any questions don’t forget our email: asb.dc2010@gmail.com

Fun news: Today we met up with our chaperone, Cassie Abueg. From our 5 minute talk, she’s pretty much bomb.

WHAT UP D.C.?

So D.C. Our nation’s capital. THE BEST PLACE EVER (next to Boston, of course…)

“Don’t write that! NYC IS THE BEST”-Zach

“I’m typing so I’m not writing that. Even though I just did.” -Eddie

ANYWAYS. D.C is home to so many great places that you have either heard of or been to. But DID YOU KNOW That famous red phone that’s depicted in many movies isn’t actually in the Oval Office. It’s in the Pentagon. CRAZY.

Did you also know that the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere is found in the Metro Station of the DC suburb of Wheaton and is a 500 foot-long ride, more than twice the length of an average city block?? THAT’S A REALLY LONG ESCALATOR. by the way, we’re definitely going there.

We said escalator, not elevator. So not this:

We also want everyone to know that we will be sneaking into the white house like the Salahi’s did. This way we can meet the President and take some pictures.

We also want everyone to know about the event that will be going on this weekend. It is called “Make ASB Numero Uno” and we hope that a lot of people will show up. If anybody eats at Uno’s in Kenmore Square on 12/12/2009,  20% of all the sales that day will be donated to ASB!

So we hope that you all keep following our blog because we will have updates about housing soon!

P.S. Here are some more fun facts about ourselves!

Eddie loves to cook. Like seriously. He can straight up cook. That’s all he’s going to tell you. But get pumped.

Zach is just awesome and you will be lucky to be his friend.

Updates!

Hey what’s going on ASB lovers!?

LAST TWO WEEKS OF SCHOOL. CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY.

So anyways, the two of us have been working hard on doing as much as can before winter break hits. As of right now, we have some really great places to go check out when we’re done volunteering at Food & Friends everyday (FYI- we will be working with the organization every day from 9-2). We’re still trying to figure out details for housing and meals, but we’re confident we can get things done before winter break. We’ll keep you updated!

Aside from the actual site, we thought it’d be good idea to educate you more on the issue area HIV/AIDS. Pronounced hiv-ah-dees, this issue area is one of most underlooked issues in the nation. When people think about HIV or AIDS, most think of those suffering in Africa. Though there are many cases of AIDS in Africa, it is also a major problem here in the United States, especially in the United States. At the end of 2006, an estimated 1.1 million persons in the United States were living with diagnosed or undiagnosed HIV/AIDS. Since it broke out in the 80’s and has continued to grow, it has evolved into an epidemic. For every 100,000 Washington D.C. residents over the age of 12, there are nearly 3,000 people living with HIV or AIDS. This is a staggering amount and is a higher rate than West Africa. There’s so much to learn about this issue area, so if you’re interested in learning more about it, the CDC has lots of information, as well as checking out this site: http://www.avert.org/usa-statistics.htm. Also learn more about Food & Friends here: http://www.foodandfriends.org/site/pp.asp?c=ggLMIYOGKrF&b=3747191

Fun Facts:

So the two of us are huge fans of the TV show Friends. We both own all the seasons, have seen each episode at least five time. Healthy obsession? Yep, we think so. By the way, Zach has Unagi and Eddie likes to pivot (there’s something for you Friends fans to laugh about).

Zach:

Eddie:

I know all of you are itching to sign up for our trip, but remember, ONLINE REGISTRATION starts at 8am on January 31st. Which’ll be right around the corner after winter break, so prepare yourself! Enjoy the weekend and try and stay warm. (Crazy saying that, with snow falling later today and 70 degree weather on Thursday…oh New England…)

YAY GET EXCITED FOR D.C!

Hey guys, Zach and Eddie here, this year’s coordinators for the Washington D.C trip to Food and Friends! Who are we? Well here’s a little introduction to both of us:

Eddie Chen is a junior in Sargent studying human physiology. Hailing from the borough (west, that is) of Massachusetts, he loves sports and anything sports-related, absolutely loves his music (he would probably die without his iPod), loves the arts (especially dance), and is looking forward to a great ASB experience. This is his first ASB and is PUMPED to share it with his cobro Zach.

Zach Meyer is SOO stoked for this year because this is his very first ASB and couldn’t be even more excited. He’s from the GREAT state of New York from a town called Commack (IT’S ON LONG ISLAND). Like Eddie, he’s obsessed with his music and also loves television and film. Basically, Washington D.C is the best ASB trip and it has the best coordinators. SO GET EXCITED!!

We are SOOO pumped for this year’s trip to D.C. Once again, we’ll be working at Food and Friends where we will help make food deliveries to the HIV/AIDS community in the D.C area. We will be working with local groceries and cooking some ballin’ meals in the kitchen to meet the specialized needs of those living in life-challenging illnesses. We will be working from 9 in the morning to 2 each day and look forward to touching as many lives as we can in the week we are in the area! Not only will we be volunteering at Food and Friends, but we’ll also be exploring our nation’s capital and hitting up as many monuments and museums as we can! We are working on creating a meaningful and exciting itinerary for our volunteers and hope you keep checking back here for updates on the trip.

We are as excited about this trip as this kid is about his Nintendo 64:
